Panoply 2017: It's a Wrap!

In 2014 I started this collage photo summary format as a way to capture my year in one fell swoop, a sort of journal summary. Putting these collages together by subject matters that matter to me (and how I spend the majority of my time) is my way of remembering the best of 2017. It's been a good year.

There are no lengthy descriptions, but there are links back (in the captions) under each photo collage subject header: Home, Garden, Tablescaping, Tales of the Traveling Totes, Vintage Finds, Panoply Booth Displays, and Miscellaneous Musings. If you're so inclined to read, you can click on the captions, each semicolon separating different posts on that header. The one marked in bold under each header was my personal favorite, and often the most viewed of that subject. You can also select a label, main menu header, or type the subject into the search block just above my photo on the right sidebar (e.g., garden, tablescape, etc), and related posts will come up. Feel free to dig in. Enjoy!

Miss Luna C and the Traveling Totes Tribe

Earlier in June, when Sarah of Hyacinths for the Soul told us about her connection with The Tales of the Traveling Totes (you can read about its origin by clicking on the tote image on my sidebar, or here), I was immediately drawn in. I love MacKenzie-Childs products (no sponsorship, or compensation here, just a product line I like). To make a long story longer, I am now a tote traveling tribe member, joining Patti, Sarah, Linda, Debbie, and several other bloggers (noted at the end of this post), here with the latest escapade of the traveling tote - places we've been this summer. Be sure to also read below on how you can be eligible for Debbie's giveaway that coincides with this month's adventure!

As part of the fun in The Tales of the Traveling Totes journey, we've each named our totes. Allow me to introduce my traveling tote, "Miss Luna C". For nearly a month, she's been sitting in the closet, just waiting to go!
Miss Luna C
She's been dreaming of her ventures, and her maiden voyage just happened to be an auction. A preview indicated there'd be a few vintage dishes from the Greenbrier Hotel up for bid, and they would easily fit into Miss Luna C's interior compartment.
The Auction Goer and Miss Luna C's Maiden Voyage
Lo and behold, with a closer inspection, not only were all of the dishes in poor condition (big chips on the undersides), the gavel came down on prices way beyond this gal's limit. (Sorry for the blurred auction action scenes below, but I was at a distance, trying to keep up with the action and zoom simultaneously).
The Lost Lot
I've already got a nice stock of vintage Greenbrier china, so I passed on the dishes. However, I did end up scoring a nice set of 1939 plated flatware, service for six.
Nobility Plate's "Royal Rose" (1939) Service for Six
This little box lot fit quite nicely into Miss Luna C - her first loot hauled!
Luna C's First Loot
In just a little over one week from now, it's the Route 127 World's Longest Yard Sale. Yep, the Panoply sisters are heading out to the sale in the Kentucky area this year, and Miss Luna C is going along!
Hopefully, we'll get a little further than we did the last time we attended - which was about one block, hahaha. Although I think lots of treasures could fit into Miss Luna C, I hardly think something as big as the Calmady Children print from the last LYS will fit (photo below), what do you think?
Oh, and then after that, Miss Luna C has big plans of leaving on a jet plane, and heading to - Naples, FL! See that yellow bag on the beach in the photo below, between the two chairs? Move over baby, Miss Luna C is ready to amp up the glam for toting water, beach reads, and sunscreen to that beach, and more than willing to carry back shells that may be collected along the shore.
Oh yes, she's ready.
More than ready.
Where have all the other Traveling Tote tribe members been this summer?  By all means, go check them out at the links below. I tell ya, these girls get around! And be sure to come back in September for yet another episode of Tales of the Traveling Totes and see what the girls have been up to. ;)

To have a chance for winning her giveaway as part of the Tales of the Traveling Totes series, be sure to stop by Debbie's blog @Mountain Breaths. It's a sweet package of 5x7 note cards from her recent trip to Rhinebeck.
All you have to do is visit her blog, and leave a comment, letting her know you were there. You can go straight there with the link I've provided - it's that simple!

Until our next adventure, thank you for dropping in to visit. It's a pleasure to have you here!

This one gets its own title for 2018. I made a proposal in January 2018 to purge personal inventory of vintage finds. In April 2018 I finished the project with this purge recap. It was mentioned throughout the year in various posts, whether it was in Musings (see No. 12 under that subject above), Vintage Finds or otherwise, but it was a big deal for me. I have a feeling 2019 will be the year of the Death Cleaning.

Thank you to each and all of my readers throughout the year. Your comments, emails and other social media interactions are part of what makes my life a happy life. I love all the friendships gained through blogging.
Cheers to the New Year!

Miss Luna C's Spring Adventures and a Secret Swap

Welcome back to this installment of the Tales of the Traveling Totes Adventures! For the background on this series of related posts, you can read all about the makings of the Traveling Totes Tribe here, and catch the earlier adventures at the bottom of this post.

After the inaugural year of Traveling Totes, our members bounced around ideas of what direction our tribe might take next, and how we could get to know each other a little better. What fun that has been! That getting to know each other is the real focus of my post today, and I'll explain that a little further on. For now, here's a sneak peek of what's to come!
Secret Swap: Texas Treasures
Miss Luna C's adventures pick up since our last recap of March 1 with the weather finally breaking out of winter's freeze. Miss Luna C has helped me out in a few activities since the weather has been heating up.

Miss Luna C was put to work in mid-March, helping me out with toting things to the antique mall where my two sisters and I (Panoply) rent space. For at least one of my weekly updates to fluff our booth spaces, I loaded her up with vintage camera equipment I had for sale, along with some miscellaneous spring items.
To the Antque Mall
Then, just before Easter, my sister M and I participated in a Blenko Glass Factory workshop and made glass eggs on the shop floor, and Miss Luna C was right there with me.
To the Blenko Factory Workshop
Upon our return to the factory to pick up our eggs a week later, Miss Luna C helped me out by hauling a few things home from the Annual Blenko Factory Warehouse sale. You can read more about those adventures here, and here.
To the Blenko Factory Warehouse Sale
In early May, it looked as though spring was regressing in our region, so Mr. P. and I took another trip south, to Naples, FL. Little did we know, when we left town, we'd be taking the long way to get there. Seems the weather wasn't cooperating between home and the Gulf Coast and, combine that with an economy airline, and you've got yourself a ticket for delay....we were waylaid in Myrtle Beach, SC overnight, and didn't make it to Naples until the next day.
Air Travel
We stayed in a Marriott property for the overnight delay, and I simply had to capture the obvious photo opportunity you see below...the decor was a dead ringer coordination for Miss Luna C's color combo, hahaha!
A Perfect Match!
Once all the arrangements had been modified (our hotel and rental car), we made the best of the night in Myrtle Beach by going to Broadway at the Beach for an evening walk and dinner. The next day, we reached Naples without further ado, and made ourselves bums on the beach for the rest of the week. It was a nice way to segue into warmer weather once home.
Beach Baby
Since my arrival home, Miss Luna C has taken a little break, but I've been busy in both home and garden.

As I mentioned at the start of my post, we Traveling Tote tribe members wanted to get to know each a little better this go around. We collectively decided to participate in a "secret swap". All those 'in' were to receive a name drawn and sent by Patti from Pandora's Box. We were each to shop for a regional gift for our swap mate, based on two things. First, the gift could have a flavor from our home region, or an area we traveled to recently, with a nominal value pre-agreed by all participating. Secondly, we were to make an effort to read a little more of our swap mate's posts in order to tailor the gift to their style, likes, etc. Well, folks, I'm here to tell ya I am now an unofficial Cowgirl, thanks to my swap gift sender, Sarah Anderson from Hyacinths for the Soul, who hails from the great state of Texas!
Oh my goodness! My gift package received was an absolute treat, both literally and figuratively, full of Texas-themed goodies! Sarah knows Marburger/Round Top are on my bucket list, and she also knows I collect napkins rings - monogrammed, particularly. Look at this very cool, personalized vintage ring she selected from Marburger treasures, with the Marburger/Round Top shop guide tucked inside.
Marburger 'Branded' Napkin Ring
This package was so full of awesomeness, and pictured below are some very cute items for tablescaping (another activity Sarah knows I enjoy): a set of cowgirl napkins and unique, cowgirl hat place card holders, along with a Breakfast Tacos regional cookbook from Austin and one of Sarah's tried-and-true casserole recipes. Yummo!
Tablescaping in the Making
Here are another couple items I must show you. Sarah must be in cahoots with my other two Panoply sisters, as she sent me these little zippered pouches and told me to show them who's boss, lol! (My sisters are often accusing me of taking charge).
Boss Lady
There were fabulous treats - pecan praline clusters, mints in Texas-themed tins, HUGE Texas Hold 'Em playing cards (all visible in the collage photo). There was even a nod to my love of gardening included - a packet of Texas bluebonnet seeds - which I've planted and am happy to report they are emerging as seedlings as of this writing (they'll be annuals in my region).

To Sarah, you are such a thoughtful person whom I am so glad to know and share our love of things we have in common (you know what they are). And to Patty (who, incidentally, is my secret swap gift recipient), thank you for bringing us tribe mates together, and for keeping us organized - it's so much fun! To all the readers out there - thank you for giving us purpose in sharing our traveling tote adventures by reading our tales, and by participating with your comments. We love it!

If you'd like to revisit Miss Luna C's previous travels, just click on Traveling Totes under the drop-down menu bar Travel header (top of blog), and you'll find all those posts. Or, just click on any of these links here:

Until our next adventure (coming September 1, 2016), thank you for traveling along. It's a pleasure to have your company and visit!

Traveling Totes Summer Fun Recap, Another Giveaway!

Welcome back to the Tales of the Traveling Totes Adventures! Today's installment is a recap of all the summer fun we've been having since our last post on June 1. I'm glad you're here, and hope you'll read through to the end of this post for a chance to win our tribe's giveaway in this installment!
Traveling with MacKenzie-Childs and Kate Spade
It seems summer has flown by and, for the most part, life has been good. Miss Luna C and I started off our month of June with a little bumpy ride, as Mr. P. delivered an unexpected baby kidney stone.
We spent more than 12 hours in the ER early in June, and although it was very real labor for Mr. P., the baby kidney stone was apparently not full term. Another almost 3 weeks went by before the baby stone had to be taken surgically. I'm happy to report all is well with Mr. P. once again, and Miss Luna C provided much needed assistance with carting magazines and snacks for me while I waited......and waited.

Mid-June marks the annual MacKenzie-Childs sale which leads up to the barn sale in July. Traveling Tote tribe members somehow got onto a new tote jag, and I think we are all now proud owners of new totes! My town tote arrived in late June, and she is aptly named after my town. Meet Miss Charley C. She's the perfect size for quick trips and/or everyday use!
Rita C and Miss Charley C, at the Ripley Antique and Flea Market
Miss Charley C made her debut travel to an antique and flea market held in a nearby town on Independence weekend. It was a day of concession food, and lots of unanticipated Panoply buying!
Christa of 60 Grit, and me with Charley C, after loading the SUV
We ended up filling the SUV to the max, thanks to the gal you see pictured above. You can read more about that adventure and all the cool things we bought from Christa here.

Mid-July had me traveling with both Miss Luna C and Miss Charley C, to Bristol, TN, with Mr. P.
Signage in Bristol, TN/VA. "Bristol VA TN A Good Place to Live"
Bristol is a unique, small town that borders both the Tennessee and Virginia state lines; hence, the signs pictured above. If you travel down State Street, you can actually be in one state or the other, depending on which side you're traveling or standing. :)

It so happens Mr. P. went to school in Bristol, TN, and the occasion for returning was the funeral of his college basketball coach. As sad as that occasion was, it was also an utterly delightful reunion of 8 of 10 (2 are deceased) of Mr. P.'s first and second string basketball team members. I was able to catch a photo of  7 of 8 guys (the other had already left), and we all had lunch together after the service. (I should've had one of the guys hold my bag, right??)
Mr. P and college basketball teammates at an unplanned reunion, Bristol, TN
After the services, Mr. P. offered to take me antiquing in nearby Abingdon, VA, which is a little town I love to shop and spend time in. One of my favorite shops, Foxglove Antiques & Etc., was my choice for the limited time I had. As you can see, I managed to make good use of my time.
Rita C with Miss Charley C outside of Foxglove Antiques, Abingdon, VA
While we were shopping, the shop owner (Karen McClanahan), went gaga over Miss Charley C, and we chatted about our Traveling Tribe. Karen pulled out her latest bag she had purchased recently in Charleston, SC, and we ended up having way too much fun with bags and photos. She even had Mr. P. modeling her bag for the photo ops that she so gladly took charge of handling.
Rita C and Mr. P. having fun with bags at Foxglove Antiques in Abingdon, VA
On our trip home from TN, Mr. P. and I made a stop at Tamarack, in Beckley WV. If you're ever traveling WV Turnpike (I-77 / I-64 at Exit 45) and you've never experienced Tamarack, you simply must stop your next opportunity! Simply put, it showcases the best of West Virginia's artisans in a retail center. The food court offers notable regional cuisine, and has been reviewed and given accolades by Southern Living, among others. At any given date, there may be exhibitions or stage performances on site, so be sure to check their calendar of events at the link provided if you do travel that way.
On the day we traveled through, we took a little break, browsed a few of the shop kiosks, and I naturally took some photo ops. :) These photos all featured Miss Luna C, both indoors and outside. See my own display of Greenbrier China here.

August was, by far, the most travel Miss Luna C and Miss Charley C have seen to date! As this post is published, Miss Luna C and Miss Charley C are still on a Great, American Road Trip (GART)! So far, here's where we've been in terms of geography:
Road Trippin' USA: KY, IN, IL, MO, IA, SD, WY, ID
Along with these states:
UT, CA, AZ, NM, NV
We've covered over 6,000 miles so far, and are heading back home right now. These are some of the places we've been:
The St. Louis Gateway National Park, MO
Sioux Falls National Park, SD
Smithfield Ham Plant was just down the road from Sioux Falls (you could smell ham in the air, but this little piggy was interested in what was in the bag!)
We visited the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD (a must-see tourist trap - that facade changes annually, and is constructed totally of corn!)
We were ear!
Badlands National Park, SD
Wall Drug Store, SD (another tourist trap - even Annie Oakley was bored out of her mind!)
Crazy Horse Memorial, SD - still a work in progress, begun in 1942
Mt. Rushmore National Park, SD
Cody, Wyoming Rodeo Stampede Park
Yellowstone National Park, WY
Needless to say, we saw lots of cowboys and Indians along the way, some faux...
And some real....
Cowboy at Grand Canyon National Park, AZ
We visited Promontory Summit (UT), where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met and the final, golden spike was struck in 1869. (and once again by me and Miss Charley C!).
We climbed city peaks (Salt Lake City, UT)
And we hiked down into red dirt canyons (Arches, Bryce and Zion National Parks, UT)
In fact, after so much traveling and red dirt, Miss Luna C had to make a pit stop for laundry in Moab, UT to regroup.
And then we lost our heads and landed in Sin City for the night....

...and took in Cirque du Soleil's production of MJ One before our early morning getaway.
MJ One at Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas
We finally reached our turnaround point, the Pacific Beach of San Diego, after two weeks.
Pacific Beach, San Diego CA
As we began our trek back east, we crossed the historic Route 66 more than once.
We visited the Grand Canyon (AZ)
Grand Canyon National Park, AZ
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (Santa Fe, NM)
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, NM
And that's just part of it! More states were traveled on the return home - Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee  and Kentucky (again) - before crossing back to West Virginia - HOME!
Making our way through Tennessee, we stopped in a couple places, and Miss Charley C proved to be popular among its notable residents, including these:
West TN Music Museum, Brownsville, TN
And Mike Wolfe's Antique Archaeology (Nashville, TN)
Antique Archaeology, Nashville, TN
Quite apart from the Traveling Totes Tribe, I'm sure I'll be summarizing the highlights of this Great, American Road Trip in a few posts here on Panoply, so be sure and watch for those!
